We commit to reaching net zero emissions across our value chain in 2030.

Climate change impacts each of us. At Meta, our mission is to help people build community and bring the world closer together.

The communities we are part of can only thrive in a safe and healthy world. Operating sustainably and addressing climate change through bold, meaningful action are paramount to our mission and essential to help the world avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Reducing our GHG emissions

Reducing GHG emissions across our global operations and value chain is our top priority and the most effective strategy to reach net zero. Failure to reduce emissions today will lock in high carbon intensity business tomorrow.

In 2020, we achieved net zero GHG emissions in our direct operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by reducing our emissions by 94% compared to 2017 levels.

To reach net zero emissions across our value chain in 2030, we are setting a science-aligned emissions reduction target and roadmapped our strategy to systematically transform the way we do business. Our approach includes prioritizing efficiency and circularity in our business decisions, embracing low-carbon technology to operate with a lower emissions footprint, and enabling at least two-thirds of our suppliers to set science-aligned reduction targets by 2026.

Supporting carbon removal projects

As part of our strategy to reach net zero emissions across our value chain in 2030, Meta supports projects that remove carbon equivalent to any residual emissions we are unable to reduce by 2030.

In 2022, we supported agroforestry, improved forest management, and ecological restoration projects in California, Australia, and Mexico.

Our strategy seeks to scale the voluntary carbon market toward the types of high-quality projects necessary for the world to align with a 1.5º future. Our contribution to the Frontier advance market commitment will help catalyze a market for technological carbon removal, while our partnership with Aspiration will help unlock necessary capital for nature-based solutions.

With the National Indian Carbon Coalition, Meta has pledged to develop carbon removal projects on tribal lands that protect and restore forests through Indigenous leadership and traditional ecological knowledge. Read more about the 1T.org pledge here.

Tackling climate misinformation

It is estimated that nearly 2 billion adults know little to nothing about climate change. At the same time, misinformation about climate change continues to spread both online and offline.

This reality led to the creation of the Climate Science Center (CSC) in 2020. The CSC increases access to science-based and dynamic climate information to drive awareness and inspire more people to take action. We work with the world’s leading climate science organizations to ensure that the information we feature is timely and accurate.

We have expanded the CSC to all countries, attracting more than 18 million followers. We’ve also added a Climate InfoFinder and Climate Science Literacy Campaign to our suite of tools, such as fact checking and labels, to help combat climate misinformation.

Meta’s 2022 carbon footprint

We removed 80,000 tons of CO2 through carbon removal projects to cover our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

GHG accounting

We disclose our GHG emissions annually and are committed to increasing transparency around our impact. Our GHG footprint includes the emissions associated with running our business and data centers, as well as the indirect emissions created upstream from our operations and downstream in our products. Our emissions are calculated based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and are verified by a third party. We will continue reporting and updating our emissions boundaries as our business grows on our path to net zero emissions.

2023 Sustainability Report

We envision a just and equitable transition to a zero-carbon economy and are working to scale inclusive solutions that help create a healthier planet for all.
