Our vision for a sustainable world

At Facebook, our mission is to bring the world closer together and to give people the power to build community.

Climate change impacts all of us. We recognize the urgency of climate change and are committed to help tackle this global challenge.

We are taking action by minimizing the impact of our energy, emissions and water usage, protecting workers in our supply chain, and partnering with others around us to develop and share solutions for a more sustainable world.

We believe sustainability is about more than operating responsibly. It’s an opportunity to support the communities we’re a part of and make a positive impact on the world. We were one of the first tech companies to commit to supporting facilities with renewable energy. Whether it is building water- and energy-efficient data centers or creating sustainable workplaces, we prioritize materials and solutions that minimize our impact on the environment and advance employee wellbeing. We also work with like-minded partners to take action and develop solutions for a more sustainable world.

Our Plan

We are working hard to minimize our energy, emissions and water impact, while also embracing the responsibility and opportunity to impact the world beyond our operations. Facebook’s strategy is anchored by two big goals and a science-based target to help drive change across the many communities in which we operate:

  • Minimize our environmental footprint through operational excellence and innovation
  • Collaborate with others to develop innovation solutions and catalyze climate action

Innovation for Our World

We’re on track to reach our 2020 target of reducing our operational greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent and supporting our global operations with 100 percent renewable energy. We have set an ambitious goal to reach net zero emissions across our value chain in 2030.

Collaboration for Good

We are proud to partner with others to catalyze climate action. We believe that addressing the impacts of climate change will require new and innovative solutions. That’s why we are collaborating with industry-leading companies and nonprofit organizations to develop innovative solutions that help people better understand and address climate-related challenges within their communities.

Priority Issues

We have a dedicated sustainability team that works to implement our overarching sustainability strategy and ensure alignment across global teams. We also have embedded sustainability practitioners who advance progress on topics such as renewable energy procurement, sustainable data center design, sustainable facility operations and supply chain.

We conduct a climate-related risks and opportunities assessment to understand future transitional and physical risks. We use models and conduct analysis of potential risk scenarios, including a business-as-usual pathway (RCP 8.5) to understand the impacts that acute and chronic physical risks may have on our global facilities, data centers and supply chain. These risk assessments are especially important for facilities that operate in areas that may be negatively impacted due to extreme weather events and climate change. Insights from this assessment helps inform our operational strategy and identify key opportunities for us to weave climate-related considerations into our overall plan.

We are also hard at work addressing the risks that climate change poses to our suppliers, and ensuring safe, healthy and fair working conditions in our supply chain. We are a member of the Responsible Business Alliance, Responsible Minerals Initiative, and Responsible Labor Initiative– multi-stakeholder and industry-wide initiatives. Facebook’s Anti-Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement outlines our commitment to combating forced labor in our supply chain and our Conflict Minerals Policy sets our conflict minerals expectations.
